Tribes by Seth Godin

books May 19, 2021

I read a lot of Seth Godin. That's why when I found this in a box of books I was unpacking, I was surprised to realize I hadn't read it yet. I have a lot of books like that. My 'to read' stack is always very high.

But, as soon as I realized I had missed this one, I sat down with it.

Now understand, he wrote this book back in 2008, but the concepts, ideas and advise rings just as true today as it did then, if not more so.

'The Web can do amazing things, but it can't provide leadership. That still has to come from individuals-people just like you who have passion about something. Anyone who wants to make a difference now has the tools at her fingertips.'

So, pick this one up and give it a read.

First, Break All The Rules

basecamp books Jun 01, 2020

Today's episode of Basecamp is focused on the book "First Break All The Rules: What The World's Greatest Managers Do Differently." by Gallup. It's about what really separates great managers from okay or even poor managers.

It's called "First Break All The Rules: What The World's Greatest Managers Do Differently." It's about what really separates great managers from okay or even poor managers and quite frankly, I mean, think about how many really bad managers have you worked for?

There are a lot of them out there. But there are quite a few that are excellent, and if you can get a manager to really excel at managing the people below him or her, it can really have an impact on your business.

I really like this liked this book a lot. It really spoke to me and validated my feelings that a lot of what I've been talking about over the over the years and a lot of the way I deal with people. So I would be reading it and say to myself "I got one". So, I was pretty happy about that....

Outthink the Competition - Kaihan Krippendorff

books Apr 19, 2020

This is hands down, one of my top favorite books. Its about strategically working through disruption and thriving in it. It talks about embarrassing a new strategic reality, harnessing strategic creativity and being the outthinker that will successfully reshape their company.

Krippendorff is tossing the old playbook and introducing us to new strategic behavior. He bases HIS playbook on The IDEAS Framework.

  • Imagine - Define our vision and goals: our challenges
  • Dissect - Choose different leverage points
  • Expand - generate more potential strategies
  • Analyze - Choose disruptive strategies
  • Sell - Decide how to communicate strategy

I can't possibly do this book justice in this little blog, but now is the time to become disruptive in your business. Outthink your competition and try a new approach that can have profound effects on your business.

The Greatest Business Decisions of All Time - V Harnish & the Editors of Fortune

books Apr 19, 2020

This was a fun read. Apple, Ford, Zappos and others. They all made crazy decisions and changed the course of the business and, in some cases, society as we know it. This book is made up of short background stories behind the greatest business decisions of all time. We get to look inside the thought processes leading to these "groundbreaking moments". I really enjoyed this book. It was a fascinating read.

Mastering the Rockefeller Habits - Verne Harnish

books Apr 19, 2020

This is the book that started it all for me. This has been my bible for almost 2 decades. One Page Scorecards, Organizational Alignment and Focus and Quarterly Themes. This is the book that I went to for all my clients and whenever I had a business challenge of growth. If you want to understand how to grow your business and increase the value of your business, without losing your mind or your bank account, this is where you begin.

How to set-up your business for under $1,000 - D Fleyshman & B Hampton

books Mar 14, 2020

Yeah? Ok, I guess I would recommend this one? It's a fast read and does have information, but I guess I'm jaded. If you are completely new to business, it could be useful. It could also have you spending more time on unnecessary To-Do's. The best thing I like about it is the extensive Resources section in the back. Everything you could ever need regarding a start-up from Domain Name, to Web Hosting, Idea Generation, Forms, Design & Development, Blogs, Newsletters, the works.

Intentional Living - John Maxwell

books Mar 14, 2020

Quotes like “Start small but believe big”, “…we must merely make a difference in the place where we live.”, “Success is gained in inches at a time, not miles”, and the one that made me cry and realize I do have a purpose was, “Who I am makes a difference.”

The whole book reads this way. I read this book just after my husband passed. It gave me purpose again. It helped me remember, there is a reason I am here, and I have a job to do. I better get to it. You don’t need to have a tragedy in your life for this book to have a powerful influence on you. We all want to feel significant, meaningful and necessary. However, most of us are waiting for that to drop in our lap. This book will remind us that “The key to a life that matters is being intentional.”

Think Smarter: Critical thinking to improve problem-solving and decision-making skills. Michael Kallet

books Feb 27, 2020

What do you do when you have an issue or challenge at work? Do you react to it? Or, do you take the time to think about it critically?  What is critical thinking and why do we care? Mike Kallet explains it in this book. Instead of jumping to the first reactionary thought that comes to mine, Mr. Kallet gives us examples of how to use the process of critical thinking. He gives us great ‘takeaways’ so we can apply the concepts into our everyday business life. Critical thinking can help a business ‘step up the innovative capabilities of their teams’.

Take the Stairs - Rory Vaden

books Aug 01, 2019

I had the pleasure of hearing Rory Vaden speak a few years ago. If you ever have the chance, I highly recommend it. He has a great story.

His book ‘Take the Stairs’ is a challenge to us all, as a nation, not just as business people. We have become lazy. On a constant look out for the next quick fix. In a sentence, we are very quick to take the escalator, when really, we should take the stairs. The stairs will get us there just about as quickly but has far better results.

Here are some of my favorite points.

Successful people have all had to do things they didn’t feel like doing in order to get where they are.

Learn to fall in love with the daily grind. I love this section. It really spoke to me. Its about how we live our lives continually chasing some mythical finish line. “Once I finish college, I’ll make the money I need.” “ Once the kids leave the house…..” “After I get that...
